What is the vestibular system?
The vestibular system is the portion of the inner ear and brain that helps control equilibrium and balance. Studies estimate that as many as 35% of adults aged 40 years or older in the US (approximately 69 million Americans) have experienced some form of vestibular dysfunction.
Symptoms of Vestibular Disorders:
- Difficulty walking
- Oscillopsia (visual changes while moving)
- Ocular tracking difficulty and eye fatigue
Symptoms can last a few minutes to a few hours or longer and may come and go.
Consequences of not seeking treatment:
Untreated vestibular dysfunction may lead to increased risk of fall and injury, decreased mobility, and depression resulting in a loss of quality of life. Many patients experience fear of movement leading to a sedentary lifestyle which results in increased stiffness, joint pain, decreased strength, decreased endurance and overall decrease in functional activities.
